Cyber Insurance

Insurance covering the costs of an incident, subject to conditions you must already meet.

What Cyber Insurance means

Cyber policies typically cover incident response, forensics, legal advice, notification costs, business interruption and sometimes extortion payments. Applications now ask detailed technical questions, and answers that do not match reality can invalidate a claim.

Why Cyber Insurance matters for small businesses and nonprofits

The application itself is a useful audit, because it reveals the controls insurers consider baseline: multi factor authentication, tested backups, endpoint detection and an incident plan. Cover has also become materially harder to obtain without them.

What to do about Cyber Insurance

Three steps to deal with Cyber Insurance

  • Answer the application accurately, and fix what you cannot honestly claim
  • Check the exclusions, particularly around unpatched systems and unmanaged devices
  • Know the notification deadline in your policy and put it in your incident plan
