Disaster recovery covers the technical side of getting back to work: which systems come back first, from which copies, on which infrastructure, and who does it. It is defined by two numbers, how much data you can afford to lose and how long you can afford to be down.

Without a written plan, recovery is improvised at the worst possible moment by people who are tired and under pressure. The order of restoration matters more than most people expect, because systems depend on one another.

- Write down your recovery time and recovery point targets, then test against them
- Record the restore order, since identity and network usually come before applications
- Keep a copy of the plan somewhere reachable when your systems are down
