Encryption

Converting data so that only someone with the right key can read it.

What Encryption means

Encryption protects data at rest, on disks and in storage, and in transit, as it crosses networks. Modern operating systems and cloud platforms provide both, often switched off by default on older devices. The mathematics is rarely the weak point; key management and configuration are.

Why Encryption matters for small businesses and nonprofits

An encrypted lost laptop is a lost asset. An unencrypted one is a reportable data breach, with notification duties and possible penalties. The difference is one setting confirmed in advance.

What to do about Encryption

Three steps to deal with Encryption

  • Confirm full disk encryption is on for every laptop and record the evidence
  • Ensure certificates for your sites are valid and renew automatically
  • Know where the recovery keys are stored and who can reach them
