Exploit

The technique or code that turns a vulnerability into an actual compromise.

What Exploit means

A vulnerability is the weakness; an exploit is the means of using it. Public exploit code often appears within days of a fix being published, which is what turns a theoretical flaw into mass scanning and opportunistic compromise within a week.

Why Exploit matters for small businesses and nonprofits

This is why patch timing matters so much. The dangerous window is not before the fix exists, it is between the fix being published and your systems having it.

What to do about Exploit

Three steps to deal with Exploit

  • Treat published fixes for internet facing systems as urgent, not routine
  • Watch for advisories noting that exploit code is publicly available
  • Use layered controls so one successful exploit is not sufficient
