Sandbox
An isolated environment where suspicious files can run without touching anything real.
What Sandbox means
A sandbox executes an attachment or a link in a disposable environment and observes what it does. Mail security products use this to inspect attachments before delivery. Browsers and mobile operating systems apply the same principle continuously to isolate each application.
Why Sandbox matters for small businesses and nonprofits
Sandboxing in the mail filter is what catches attachments no signature recognises. It is usually already included in the licences small organisations hold, and frequently left switched off.
What to do about Sandbox
- Enable attachment and link inspection in your mail platform
- Allow the small delivery delay it introduces, it is worth the trade
- Combine it with reporting, because some attacks are designed to detect sandboxes
