Typosquatting
Registering domain names that look almost like yours in order to catch mistakes and mislead readers.
What Typosquatting means
An attacker registers a near miss of your domain: a swapped letter, a missing hyphen, a different ending. The lookalike is then used to send invoices that appear to come from you, to host a copy of your login page, or to collect email sent to mistyped addresses.
Why Typosquatting matters for small businesses and nonprofits
Your clients get defrauded in your name and your reputation carries the damage. Because the fraud happens on someone else's infrastructure, you find out when a customer calls to ask why an invoice bounced.
What to do about Typosquatting
- Register the obvious variants of your own domain defensively, it is inexpensive
- Publish strict email authentication records so spoofed mail is rejected
- Monitor for newly registered domains resembling yours
