What Vulnerability Scanning means
A scanner compares what it finds against a database of known issues and reports missing patches, weak configuration and exposed services. It is automated and repeatable, which makes it good for tracking drift over time. It finds known problems and does not think creatively.
Why Vulnerability Scanning matters for small businesses and nonprofits
For a small organisation a quarterly external scan is cheap and answers the basic question of what an attacker sees when they look at you from outside. Many clients and insurers now ask for evidence of it.
What to do about Vulnerability Scanning
- Scan your external footprint at least quarterly and after any significant change
- Fix the highest severity findings first and record the ones you accept and why
- Do not treat a clean scan as proof of security, only as absence of known issues
