The first step: clearer activity selection
In Moodle 5.1, the “Activity chooser” is beautifully reorganised: activities are grouped by purpose categories (assessment, collaboration, communication, resources, interactive content). When you want to add a quiz, you choose “Assessment” and you instantly see Quiz, Assignment, Workshop etc. Alongside this you now get activity information (is it gradable? what category?) right in the chooser. And there’s an Add button and double-click shortcut so you can jump straight into creating the activity.

A better overview of activities
The “Activities overview” page now shows more relevant data: dates, counts, for all core activities like Choice, Forum, Glossary, H5P, SCORM, Quiz.

More options and control over AI
As AI tools become more common, Moodle 5.1 gives you granular control: teachers can turn AI tools on or off per course or per activity. A new provider option (DeepSeek) is added. And error messages from AI tools are improved, showing better diagnosis and guidance.

Enhanced content editing (TinyMCE improvements)

When manually enrolling a user, there are two new options: assign them to a group immediately, and set a starting from date for the enrolment.
