Network Segmentation
Dividing the network so a problem in one part cannot reach the rest.
What Network Segmentation means
Segmentation separates groups of systems and controls what may pass between them. A typical small office split puts guest wireless, staff devices, servers, and printers or cameras on separate segments, with only the connections that are genuinely needed allowed across.
Why Network Segmentation matters for small businesses and nonprofits
Most small offices run one flat network where every device can reach every other. That is why an infected laptop can encrypt the file server and why an internet connected camera can become an entry point.
What to do about Network Segmentation
- Separate guest wireless from the network your staff and servers use
- Put cameras, printers and building systems on their own segment
- Allow only the specific connections each segment actually requires
