Treating no request as trustworthy purely because it comes from inside your network.
What Zero Trust means
Zero trust replaces the idea of a trusted internal network with per request verification: who is asking, from which device, in what condition, for what resource. It is an architectural direction rather than a product, and it is implemented gradually.
Why Zero Trust matters for small businesses and nonprofits
With staff working from home, from client sites and from personal devices, there is no longer a meaningful inside. For a small organisation the practical starting point is strong identity plus device health checks, not a large programme.

- Start with multi factor authentication and device compliance requirements
- Move access decisions to your identity provider rather than the network perimeter
- Segment the network so a single foothold does not reach everything
